I build web tools. Not the flashy startup kind — the kind where you have a file in one format and you need it in another format, and you do not want to sign up for anything or pay a subscription to do it.
I have been writing code for a few years now, mostly JavaScript and TypeScript. I work with React, Next.js, and Node.js day to day. This site is a side project that started from a real problem I had at work and grew from there.
How It Started
I was working on a project where we had a bunch of tables in our GitHub README — API endpoints, config options, error codes, that kind of thing. My team lead asked me to put it all in a spreadsheet so he could share it with the client. I had maybe 15 tables, each with 10-20 rows.
I was not going to copy-paste 200+ cells one at a time. So I wrote a quick script that read the Markdown, parsed the pipes, and spit out an Excel file using SheetJS. It took me an afternoon. I used it a few more times that month, then a colleague asked for it, then another one.
I figured other people probably had the same problem, so I turned it into a website. That was the original markdowntoexcel.com — just one tool. People started emailing me asking for CSV, HTML, PDF, and Word converters. So I kept adding them. Now there are 25+ tools on here.
How It Works Under the Hood
Every conversion on this site runs in your browser. When you paste Markdown or upload a file, the JavaScript on the page processes it right there on your machine. Nothing gets sent to a server. There are no uploads, no temp files on our end, nothing.
For Excel files, I use a library called SheetJS. For PDF, the file is generated using a client-side PDF engine. Markdown parsing uses the marked library, which handles GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) — the kind with tables, task lists, and strikethrough text.
The site itself is built with Next.js and React, hosted on Vercel. The whole codebase is TypeScript. I chose this stack because it is fast, and because Next.js lets me server-render the page content (so search engines can actually read it) while keeping the converter tools interactive on the client side.
